What are the Different Types of Eczema?

 There is no contagious cause of eczema, which means that someone cannot catch it or transfer it to another person. Eczema can cause skin reddening, swelling, itching, and irritation. There are many types of eczema. we will discuss different types of eczema on face and their symptoms in this article. 

1. Atopic dermatitis


Atopic eczema or atopic dermatitis is the most prevalent type of eczema. These symptoms can often be seen in childhood. The severity of these conditions can vary. If one of their parents has atopic dermatitis, a child is more likely than the other to get it.

Symptoms of atopic dermatitis

Affected areas of the skin include:

  • Face

  • Feet

  • Hands

  • Back of the knees

  • Inner elbows

  • Back of the knees

The skin can become thicker and more reddened if it is scratched. Infected wounds can also be created by scratching.

2. Contact dermatitis

Contact dermatitis can be caused by reddening, itchy skin or a thick, flaky area that has been irritated by substances.


There are 2 types of contact dermatitis include:


  1. Allergic contact dermatitis - a reaction of the immune system to an irritant, such as metal or latex

  2. Irritant contact dermatitis - the inflammatory reaction of your skin caused by exposure to chemicals and other substances.

Symptoms of contact dermatitis 

  • Dry, red, and itchy skin can feel burning.

  • Hives are a form of a rash consisting of red, small bumps.

Contact dermatitis is more common in people with atopic dermatitis.

3. Dyshidrotic eczema

Dyshidrotic Eczema causes tiny blisters to form on your feet and hands. Women are more likely to suffer from this than men.

Symptoms of Dyshidrotic eczema


  • Cracked, dry skin that fades.

  • Painful blisters.

  • You will notice small, firm, blister-like bumps along the sides of your fingers, palms, and soles.

  • You will feel more sweaty around your ankles.

  • You may feel itchy and scaly around your blisters.

If you scratch your finger, hand, and foot frequently, it may thicken.

4. Nummular Dermatitis

This form of eczema is more common in men than in women. Most people don't experience their first eczema symptoms until their 50s. Women are more likely to get it during their teen years or early adulthood.

Symptoms of nummular dermatitis

Coin-shaped red marks are caused by nummular dermatitis. It is most common to see the marks on:

  • Legs

  • Lower back

  • Forearms

  • Backs of the hands

  • Hips

 5. Stasis dermatitis


Stasis Dermatitis is also known as gravitational dermatitis or venous eczema. It occurs when there is venous congestion or poor circulation in the lower legs.

Symptoms of Stasis dermatitis

  • The appearance of red on lighter skin tones can be purple, brown, gray or ashen on darker skin tones
  • Dryness
  • Scaling
  • Itching
  • Standing or sitting for long periods of time can result in a heavy or achy feeling
  • increased risk of developing contact dermatitis

6. Seborrheic Dermatitis

There are many different names for seborrheic dermatitis, including dandruff, Seborrheic psoriasis, and Seborrheic eczema.

Symptoms of Seborrheic Dermatitis

It affects the scalp in infants. These areas are often affected in adults.

  • Eyebrows

  • The center of the chest

  • Groin

  • The sides of the nose

  • The area behind the ears

Skin flakes are caused by seborrheic dermatitis.
